X-MOVIE: Transmission and Presentation of Digital Movies under X

    Get PDF
We describe a system for storing, transmitting and presenting digital films in a computer network. The hardware used in the system is standard hardware, as found in typical workstations today; no special hardware is required. The movies are shown in a window of the X Window System. This allows full integration with the classical components of computer applications such as text, color graphics, menues and icons. The X-MOVIE system is based on color lookup table technology. We present a new algorithm for the gradual adaptation of the color lookup table during the presentation of the film

We describe a system for storing, transmitting and presenting digital movies in a computer network. The hardware used in the system is standard hardware, as found in typical workstations today; no special hardware is required. The movies are shown in windows of the X window system. This allows full integration with the classical components of computer applications such as text, color graphics, menus and icons. The XMovie system has several innovative features: First, it contains a new algorithm for the gradual adaptation of the color lookup table during the presentation of the movie to ensure optimal color quality on low-end workstations. Second, it is a multi-standard system supporting the compression techniques MPEG, H.261, Motion JPEG, and a newly developed extension to the well known Color Cell Compression method. Third, we introduce AdFEC, a new adaptable forward error correction method for our movie transmission protocol

MTP: A Movie Transmission Protocol for Multimedia Applications

Typical color video adapters of today's PCs and workstationsuse 8 bits per pixel as an index into the color lookup table (CLUT). Full color pictures and movies have to be reduced to 256 colors. In order to avoid false colors between two frames of a digital movie, a novel technique for computing the CLUT's is proposed: A subset of the CLUT entries is reserved for new colors of the next frame. The paper presents an algorithm for the gradual adaption of the color lookup table during the transmission of a movie. First experience is reported in the framework of the XMovie project

Adaptable Forward Error Correction for Multimedia Data Streams

    Get PDF
The error handling method in traditional communication protocols is error detection and retransmission. This method is inappropriate for distributed multimedia systems for two reasons: It introduces variable delay unacceptable for isochronous streams, and it is very inefficient and difficult to use in the multicast environment typical for many multimedia applications. We propose AdFEC, an adaptable Forward Error Correction scheme based on binary polynomial algebra. It produces an adaptable amount of redundancy allowing different packet types to be protected according to their importance. The scheme was implemented in the framework of the XMovie project and proved to be very efficient

Integrated multi-omics reveals anaplerotic rewiring in methylmalonyl-CoA mutase deficiency

Multi-layered omics approaches can help define relationships between genetic factors, biochemical processes and phenotypes thus extending research of inherited diseases beyond identifying their monogenic cause 1. We implemented a multi-layered omics approach for the inherited metabolic disorder methylmalonic aciduria (MMA). We performed whole genome sequencing, transcriptomic sequencing, and mass spectrometry-based proteotyping from matched primary fibroblast samples of 230 individuals (210 affected, 20 controls) and related the molecular data to 105 phenotypic features. Integrative analysis identified a molecular diagnosis for 84% (177/210) of affected individuals, the majority (148) of whom had pathogenic variants in methylmalonyl-CoA mutase (MMUT). Untargeted analysis of all three omics layers revealed dysregulation of the TCA cycle and surrounding metabolic pathways, a finding that was further corroborated by multi-organ metabolomics of a hemizygous Mmut mouse model. Integration of phenotypic disease severity indicated downregulation of oxoglutarate dehydrogenase and upregulation of glutamate dehydrogenase, two proteins involved in glutamine anaplerosis of the TCA cycle. The relevance of disturbances in this pathway was supported by metabolomics and isotope tracing studies which showed decreased glutamine-derived anaplerosis in MMA. We further identified MMUT to physically interact with both, oxoglutarate dehydrogenase complex components and glutamate dehydrogenase providing evidence for a multi-protein metabolon that orchestrates TCA cycle anaplerosis. This study emphasizes the utility of a multi-modal omics approach to investigate metabolic diseases and highlights glutamine anaplerosis as a potential therapeutic intervention point in MMA. Take home message Combination of integrative multi-omics technologies with clinical and biochemical features leads to an increased diagnostic rate compared to genome sequencing alone and identifies anaplerotic rewiring as a targetable feature of the rare inborn error of metabolism methylmalonic aciduria
